How to Paint Whimsical Flowers with Watercolor
Supplies Needed:
- Watercolor Paint (I use a custom palette and Kuretake paints)
- Watercolor Sketchbook (I used this sketchbook)
- Watercolor Paintbrushes (My Favorite Brush)
- Colored Pencils (I use Luminance, Faber Castel, and Prismacolor)
- ColErase Pencil
- Sketch out the flowers using the ColErase pencil. If you use a regular pencil, lightly erase the lines to minimize pencil smudges.
- Fill in the flowers with watercolor paint. I like to skip around the page to allow the paint to dry.
- Add leaves and petals to areas that need it. I also added some small flowers that are just scribbles.
- When you’re done painting, let the paint dry completely.
- Go back in and add fun details to the flowers. I like to add stripes to the leaves and petals. Dots and lines are also fun. The flower centers can be filled with scallop shapes, dots, grids, scribbles, or lines.
- Use contrasting colors for a bolder look.
- Fill in empty spots with hand-drawn leaves, branches, small flowers, and berries.
Pro Tips:
- Using a limited color palette will create a cohesive painting.
- Try to use a color more than once.
- “Mistakes” can be fixed with colored pencils. Adding a scribble over the top can make it seem more intentional.
- Even plain flower shapes look fun when you add details.
